Comparative Analysis paper
To what generation can we compare the current youthful experience? Is it true that technology has brought on a new dimension to our state of thinking? The second question can be answered in the affirmative. The following paper is going to evaluate Generation Q which has been written by Thomas L. Friedman and compare it to the works of Rob Fishman in his literature dubbed, ‘The Generation of Generation Q.’
Generation Q, which is the name given by Thomas L. Friedman in his article named ‘the Generation Q.’ This generation is characterized by young Americans engaged in controversial issues. The events of September 9/11 saw a new type of genesis of a new lifestyle among the youthful Americans and as a result, they indulge in unfruitful activities (Friedman 98). Oh the other hand, there is another generation being described by Rob Fishman and which evaluates generation Q to the generation of generation Q by Thomas L. Friedman.
Rob Fishman emphasizes on changes brought about by Technology. It is therefore imperative to assert that both reflections carry out an evaluation of the generations in different perspectives. Rob Fishman and Thomas L. Friedman are diverse in their arguments. The political dimensions have been carried forth in both cases and they are both different in terms of ideology. The centre stage revolves around technology and the younger generations who are putting it into use.
Thomas L. Friedman in his article emphasizes that the young generation is passing time other than taking advantage of technology. Rob Fishman in Generation of Generation Q illustrates the youth as observing the benefits of technology. Friedman supports his narration through deploring an elaborate work which is effective and based on reflective examples. Thomas Friedman does not offer an elaborate support of his work like Rob Fishman does. Furthermore, a good reflection in literature should be characterized by an informed structure as well as framework which give the readers an easy access.
Rob Fishman presents Generation of Generation Q as being left wise by their utilization of technology. For instance, Rob Fishman points out that generation Q by Thomas Friedman illustrates a lack of depth: ‘We come off as apologists hiding our apathy behind a high tech façade.’ He continues to note that the Generation of Generation Q does not hide behind Technology; so much as that technology inspires them to stay quiet (Fishman 73). This shows that the advent of technology, as described by Rob Fishman, has brought a positive approach to various personalities in different fields of study.
In supporting technology, Rob Fishman acknowledges how it is being used to get DNA evidence. This is an indication that technology is being used to present an indisputable fact as in the case of O.J Simpson trial. In a political perspective, Rob Fishman recalls the 2000 presidential election where the Supreme Court upheld the voting tabulations of the disputed ballots in Florida (Fishman 74). He further suggests that technology has generated a level of fairness in sports as well as in evidenced based DNA. However, there are some limitations presented by the given innovations. Thomas Friedman on the other hand grants a name to the young Americans currently in Colleges. He calls them the quiet Americans, and continues with the naming trend he granted during the US presidential candidates campaign.
Rob Fishman notes of the consequences that have been brought by technology. In this case, he mentions the Orwellian Justice System in the blockbuster hit minority Report and the stimulated boxing match. Rob Fishman also looks at Generation Q that employs technological variance, as having several faults, calling to mind the Bush victory that was crowned by faulty ballots. The case involving O.J Simpson was no different for he was vindicated through the DNA evidence.
Thomas Friedman tends to be selective in his approach and analysis. For instance, he employs words through selective means and shows its effect on literature. Through the use of such words and phrases, he bases his arguments which come out more clearly. This generation as shared illustrated by Thomas Friedman, seem to agree that we are not taking considerations on the things which are more important, and we are diverting to issues that can glorify our personality. A perfect example is the Arctic story.
The Arctic ice melting faster than any model was reported once and then forgotten. In fact, most candidates who were busy campaigning as well as raising funds for their campaigns with promises to tackle the issues which are not quite significant as the Arctic story. That is why the reflection by Rob Fishman suggests that the generation in Friedman’s reflection should demand appropriate answers on the candidates regarding the plans for mitigating climate change, reforming the social security as well as their plans for dealing with the deficit. In essence, it is true to note that America needs a jolt of the idealism, activism and outrage which was depicted by Friedman (Friedman 99).
The events illustrated by the 9/11 were seen as going to affect the undertakings of Rob Fishman reflections but this was not the case. The work by Thomas Friedman acknowledges the fact that they rose once again with renewed strength and they were characterized as being non-deterred. The event however resulted into the generation renewing their responsibility and going a notch higher. Both Rob Fishman and Thomas Friedman record the enthusiasm that greeted response to a given situation, an indication depicted by student’s wearing their R.O.T.C uniforms (Friedman 98). Most of the people who have no opportunity to travel abroad have reversed their energy in helping domestic issues like the Teach for America, which can be compared to as the Peace Corps in Friedman assertion.
Conclusion
The paper has presented different scenario as illustrated by Thomas L. Friedman in Generation Q as well as Rob Fishman in the Generation of Generation Q. Can we conclude that technology has brought about the desired changes we all long for? It is true therefore to state that even though technology has brought fundamental changes, significant challenges still remain to be encountered. Thomas Friedman and Rob Fishman have provoked the college students by bringing to the fore issues appertaining technology and how they affect real life.
